Not All Graffiti You See is Bad

Recently my wife and I while doing some volunteer work came across a program regarding graffiti art. When we first saw it listed in a flyer we thought it was some sort of activist or cleanup group who wanted to do the old Tom Sawyer whitewash routine. A lets cleanup the city and make it nice project. We were surprised to find it was very much quite the opposite. The intent of this program was to supply the local kids with paints and whatever they needed to encourage their art. Of course the areas where this was being done was limited but still it made sense once we learned more about it. This program was a way to encourage the arts amongst the youth lost in urban squalor. The program allowed the paintings on the walls for a specified period of time and then they where white washed and made to be a brand new canvass for whoever chose to participate. The kids still got to see their work on the walls even after it was long gone as it was photographed and kept online in a collection blog of sorts. There art and creations are never truly gone. To me it’s a great way to embrace the culture of those who paint graffiti without it spreading everywhere. It was a win win situation. So now as we participate in this volunteer group my wife and I can easily say that not all graffiti you see is bad. We just have to learn to be open minded and embrace different ideals.
